FIGURE 54  Alan Sondheim, Tora, 2012. Transformed virtual avatar and architecture.

And in the latter, as a performative practice, architecture unites with spatial experiments, like those of Alan Sondheim, whose bodies have now become a kind of architecture itself. These beings, as avatars, are what he terms thwarted architecture:

With these images I was representing the internal workings of distorted avatars, including the ‘mouth parts’ so that words might appear to be mumbled or stuttered; these were presented against a changing virtual architectural background that, close-up, doesn’t resolve at all. So the images are combinations of thwarted speech and thwarted architecture – or barely-interpretable speech and almost impossible-to-negotiate architecture. I also wanted to blend avatar and environment so that the two meld into each other, as if both were alive, both dead, both deconstructed.4
